how “diets” work

Friendly reminder that any “diet” you can stick to is a valid choice. I use the scare quotes because the term diet is synonymous with weight loss. However, the term diet actually includes all 3 types of nutrition plans:

  • caloric deficit
  • caloric surplus
  • caloric maintenance

So, in effect, we’re all on a diet at any given time.

Restriction vs. Moderation

That being said, assuming a weight (fat) loss goal, one should prioritize an approach that is sustainable and flexible. Some choose restriction (Atkins or Carnivore for example), while others choose moderation (IIFYM). Both can and do work. To date, science has not discovered an obviously superior approach to weight loss. In effect, the act of losing extra bodyfat is what provides the benefit.

The takeaway here is to utilize an approach that works best for you, the foods you enjoy, and that works with the training and schedule you keep.

Note – at no point is a juice cleanse “what works best”. Sorry.

For example, you might use South Beach to lose 20lbs but it would be important to note that it was losing the 20lbs that improved your blood pressure, cholesterol, and A1C… not the South Beach Diet itself. In short, diets work when the intake matches the athlete’s goal (weight gain / loss / maintenance) and the approach is sustainable.

What DOES WORK?

Here are a few consistencies amongst successful folks:

  • adequate protein intake (3/4 bodyweight in grams)
  • appropriate caloric intake (again, based on goals)
  • higher fiber intake (approx. 30g per day)
  • minimal / no liquid calories
  • the plan must be sustainable to an extent (this is particularly important if the goal is to lose weight and keep it off.
